Last week Naples opened the European Volleyball Championships with Italy v Sweden in Piazza del Plebiscito, on Thu 10 at 9.05pm, tickets sold out days before. From Mon 14 the pace gets back to normal, but the calendar is full. Here's what's worth your time, day by day.
Monday 14: Verdi versus Mazzini, free in Ponticelli
At 8pm, in the Basilica di Santa Maria della Neve in Ponticelli, Enzo Decaro reads “Verdi vs Mazzini” with Samantha Sapienza, Francesco Fortes and Nadia Testa. Free entry, booking recommended. It's outside the centre, and that's exactly why you should go.
Thursday 17: MANN by night
The third MANNight, the special late openings at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale (National Archaeological Museum): 7pm-11.30pm, last entry 10.30pm, evening ticket €10. From 8.30pm short performances run at the same time in the collection rooms: dance, percussion, a string quartet that moves from classical to pop, installations and DJ sets. If you'd prefer the €1 version, wait for Sat 26 September, the evening for the European Heritage Days.
Also on Thursday, at 4pm, the Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti plays at the Museum of Palaeontology in Largo San Marcellino 10, part of the Musica ai Musei series run by the Federico II University.
Friday 18: Gershwin in a courtyard and the last Unplugged
At 7.30pm, in the Cortile delle Statue at Via Paladino 39, pianist Giuseppe Gullotta and the Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti play an all-Gershwin programme. Tickets on Azzurro Service.
At 9pm (doors 8.30pm) the third edition of Napoli Unplugged, the acoustic Neapolitan music series in the Corte dell'Arte at FOQUS, Via Portacarrese a Montecalvario 69, right in the Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarter), comes to a close. On stage is Ilaria Graziano with songs from her album “Rive”. It costs €10 plus booking fee on ETES: the best value for money of the week.
From 18 to 20, at the Mostra d'Oltremare, there's also the “Il Tesoro di San Gennaro” International Chess Festival. If you play, sign up; if you don't, it's still a nice place to watch people concentrating very hard.
Saturday 19: San Gennaro, De Crescenzo and La Traviata in the courtyards
19 September is the feast of San Gennaro, the city's patron saint: at the Duomo the city waits for his blood to liquefy, as it does every year. Get there early, the cathedral fills up from the morning.
In the evening, at 9pm, Eduardo De Crescenzo brings “Essenze Jazz” to the Arena Flegrea, Viale Kennedy 54 (tickets on etes.it). On Saturday and Sunday, meanwhile, the “Traviata da Cortile” moves into the Kimbo courtyards: opera without a theatre, an arm's length from the singers.
Sunday 20: the Certosa by night
The Certosa e Museo di San Martino brings back its Notturni in Certosa, evening visits with the view over the city from the Vomero hill. The second date is 25 September. Check times and booking on the museum's website before heading up.
