Pompeii and Herculaneum open for free on the first Sunday of the month, and at Herculaneum that also covers Villa Sora in Torre del Greco. It's the busiest day of the month: set off early on the Circumvesuviana train and start with Herculaneum, which is easy to see in half a day.
