What you’ll do
You meet in the Quartieri Spagnoli, at the site entrance. The guide gives a short introduction above ground, then you go down. The first tunnels give your eyes time to adjust to the dark and help you understand how the city was shaped from below, starting with the Greeks, who were the first to dig here.
You carry on through the channels of the old aqueduct, with narrow passages and a few steps, and reach the spaces used as air-raid shelters during the war. Here the guide describes what life underground was like during the bombing and shows you the writing still on the walls. After about an hour you head back up, your head full of stories and legends.
Who it’s for
Good if you're short on time: in an hour you see a side of Naples you'd never imagine from street level. Teenagers like it too, because the guide mixes history with storytelling. Avoid it if you're claustrophobic or find walking difficult: there are narrow tunnels and stairs. It isn't wheelchair accessible.
Local tip
It's cooler underground than on the street: a light sweatshirt and closed shoes are all you need. Book a few days ahead, because slots fill up fast. When you come out you're already in the Quartieri Spagnoli: carry on through the lanes on foot or head down to Via Toledo, just round the corner.
