6 experiences in Naples, picked by people who live here.

Getting active in Naples mostly means water and pedals. Underwater there are the sunken Roman villas of Baia and the Gaiola marine park at Posillipo, which you see with mask and fins alongside a marine biologist: archaeology you do by swimming. On dry land, the centre is easy to get around by bike, from the Duomo to Piazza del Plebiscito and on to the car-free seafront, and for the climbs up the Vomero and Posillipo there are fat-tyre e-bikes. These are experiences for people who want to see the city while doing something, not for athletes: each page says how much effort it takes and from what age you can do it.

Frequently asked questions

Sport in Naples: the things people ask us most.

Do you need experience to snorkel at Baia or Posillipo?

No. You just need to be able to swim: the ruins are a few metres down and you can see them from the surface with a mask and snorkel. Equipment is included and the trip is guided. Scuba diving, on the other hand, needs a certification, or you can do a try-dive with an instructor.

Can you get around Naples by bike?

The lower part of the centre, yes: via Duomo, the Rettifilo, Piazza Municipio, Piazza del Plebiscito and the seafront as far as Mergellina are all flat, and the seafront is closed to cars. The hills need an electric bike. Guided tours last about three hours and include bike and helmet.

How late in the year can you swim in Naples?

Usually from May to mid-October. In September the water is still around 24°C, and it's the best month for snorkelling, with the clearest sea and fewer boats. In winter there are fewer trips out to sea, and it's mostly bikes and walks.

Are the sports activities suitable for teenagers?

Snorkelling is usually open to ages ten and up with an adult; bike tours depend on height, because of the bikes available. Each page shows the duration and group size; for exact age limits, check the platform's page that the Book button takes you to.
