Posillipo boat tour: Roman caves and snorkelling with a biologist
Three hours by boat along the Posillipo coast with a marine biologist and a licensed guide, in a group of no more than ten. You leave from the pier on Via Caracciolo, cruise past caves carved out by the Romans, snorkel with the gear provided (wetsuit included in the colder months) and land on a little beach known almost only to Neapolitans. Beer and taralli (crunchy Neapolitan savoury biscuits) on board, with a deck shower, sun canopy and fridge.

What you’ll do
You board at the Via Caracciolo pier and, as the boat pulls away from the seafront, the guide tells the story of the city seen from the sea while the biologist explains what lives in these waters. The boat is set up for comfort: deck shower, music, a canopy for shade, fridge and cushions.
Once below the Posillipo hill you pass the Roman-era caves cut into the rock and make the first stop for swimming and snorkelling. Mask and snorkel are provided, plus a wetsuit in the colder months. If you can't swim, you can still get in the water and stay close to the boat.
The next stop is Villa Lauro, where you land on a small, tucked-away beach with a view of the bay. Throughout the trip you're offered drinks and nibbles, beer and taralli. You're back at the starting pier after about three hours.
Who it’s for
For anyone who wants to see Naples from the water without the crowds of the big boats: couples, friends, families with children over two. Non-swimmers can still come and get in the water beside the boat. If you get seasick, bring your own medication. Children under two aren't allowed.
Local tip
Swimsuit on already, towel, hat and sun cream, and a bag that can get wet. Calm-sea days are best for snorkelling: if the weather turns, the trip can be cancelled up to half an hour before. Before or after, the seafront and Castel dell'Ovo are a short walk from the pier.
