What day trips can you take from Naples?

The most popular are Pompeii, Vesuvius, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Ischia and Procida, and the Royal Palace of Caserta. Pompeii and Herculaneum can be done in half a day; the Coast and the islands need a full day, usually eight or nine hours, leaving from the centre or the port.

Is it better to see the Amalfi Coast on a tour or on your own?

On your own you depend on trains, crowded buses and ferries, and in one day you see just one town. A minibus tour takes in Positano, Amalfi and often Ravello or Sorrento without you having to think about parking or connections. If you have two days, you can do it at your own pace.

When is the best time for boat trips in Naples?

From May to October. In September and the first half of October the sea is still warm and the boats are less full than in August. Sunset trips are the most popular: book them a few days ahead. If the sea is rough, operators move the date or refund you.

Can you climb Vesuvius without a guide?

Yes: the path to the rim of the crater starts from the car park at 1,000 metres, and the park ticket is booked online for a time slot. Organised excursions add transport from Naples or Pompeii and often combine it with the excavations or a winery stop, which are harder to fit together on your own.
