Spanish Quarter walking tour: murals, market and street food

Two hours on foot that bring together the Naples of grand monuments and the Naples of the back lanes. You start near Piazza del Plebiscito, pass the San Carlo opera house and the Galleria Umberto, then climb into the Quartieri Spagnoli (the Spanish Quarter), among street art, washing lines and the stepped lanes that cut up the hill, as far as the Maradona murals. What you’ll do

The meeting point is at the start of Via Chiaia, in front of a historic café, a stone's throw from Piazza del Plebiscito. The first stretch is monumental Naples: Teatro San Carlo, the Galleria Umberto, and the square with the Royal Palace as a backdrop. With six or more people, headsets are used so you can hear the guide over the traffic.

Then you enter the Quartieri Spagnoli, the most densely packed part of the city: a grid of uphill lanes, steps, laundry on the balconies and the street art that has filled them in recent years. The unmissable stop is the Maradona murals, the most photographed in Naples. From here you head down towards the Pignasecca.

The Pignasecca is a real working market, with food and clothes stalls, and this is where you have the included tasting, sweet or savoury. The tour ends on Spaccanapoli, in front of the Gesù Nuovo church, the Immacolata obelisk and Santa Chiara. It runs in all weather, rain included, with no postponements.

For first-timers in Naples with an afternoon to spare: in two hours you see the monumental centre, the Quartieri and the market, and get a feel for how the city fits together. Good for couples, families with older children and solo travellers. The Quartieri are all slopes and steps: worth knowing if walking is hard for you.

Local tip

Go in the morning: the Pignasecca is in full swing at that hour and the food is freshly made. Comfortable shoes, there's a lot of up and down. You finish on Spaccanapoli, so keep the time after free for the Veiled Christ or San Gregorio Armeno, a few minutes away. The tour runs with at least four people per language; otherwise it becomes bilingual.
