An hour and a half by boat along the Naples coast, from the Borgo Marinari to the waters off Posillipo, with no more than nine people on board. What you’ll do

You leave from the Borgo Marinari, the little harbour at the foot of Castel dell'Ovo. As soon as you're out of the harbour the castle is right there, seen from the side you can't see from land, and the boat follows the seafront towards Posillipo. The group is small, no more than nine people, so there's no rush and you can chat with the skipper without jostling for space.

You carry on to Palazzo Donn'Anna, which from the sea you can see in full, its façade dropping straight into the water. In the most sheltered stretch, off Posillipo, the boat stops for swimming and snorkelling: the masks are on board, along with the soft drinks. Throughout the trip the skipper talks about the history of the coast and Neapolitan seafaring culture, with stories about the palazzi and the caves you can only see from here. You're back at the Borgo Marinari after about an hour and a half, with time to dry off before you step ashore.

Who it’s for

Designed for couples, families and groups of friends who want a break from the heat and the lanes without going all the way to Capri. Also good if you're short on time, because ninety minutes later you're back on dry land on the seafront. Less suited to anyone who gets seasick or doesn't want to get wet: the swim is the part everyone looks forward to.

Local tip

Swimsuit on already, towel and sun cream, because you'll be swimming and there's little shade on the boat. The hour before sunset gives the best light on Vesuvius. Before or after, walk round Castel dell'Ovo and grab something on Via Partenope. On summer weekends, book a few days ahead.
