What you’ll do

You board at Molo Marinelli in the late afternoon, cast off and head out with the city sliding past alongside. The first stretch runs past Castel dell’Ovo, then you continue towards Posillipo, where the hill drops sheer into the water and the Bourbon villas are easier to see from the sea than from the road, because from the road you can hardly see them at all.

At Posillipo, if the sea is calm and the season allows, the boat stops for a swim. The water here is cleaner than you’d expect from a city this size, and diving in with a view of Vesuvius is usually the part that stays with you. If you’d rather not get wet, stay on board with a glass in hand.

On the way back comes the sunset: the welcome drink, a spritz, with some crunchy nibbles, and the bay changing colour with Capri and the Sorrento coast ahead. You get back to the jetty as darkness is almost falling, in time for dinner, with the salt still on your skin.

For couples, groups of friends and anyone who wants to see Naples from the sea without the chaos of the ferries: twelve people at most, slow pace.
