What you’ll do

You meet near the Augusteo station of the Centrale funicular and ride up to the Vomero in ten minutes, a hilltop district of Art Nouveau buildings and tree-lined streets. From Via Palizzi the view opens over the bay, with Capri, Vesuvius and the coast on the horizon: the guide stops here to talk about the city and you take the first photos. It's the quietest and most scenic part of the tour.

Then you start down the Petraio steps, the path linking upper and lower Naples, with one long stretch of about 35 minutes' walking and other short stops for photos. You cross Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and with every step the neighbourhood changes: from the quiet buildings of the Vomero to the washing lines and voices of the lanes.

The last part, about 25 minutes, is inside the Quartieri Spagnoli, among the alleys and murals. The tour ends on Via Pignasecca, at the market, among fish stalls and street food. The funicular is one way only: the return is all downhill, on foot, over steps and paving stones.

Who it’s for

Suits people who enjoy walking and want to get a grip on Naples in two hours, as a couple, with friends or with teenagers. It's almost all downhill, but on long, uneven flights of steps: not recommended for anyone with heart problems, who isn't fit, or who uses a wheelchair. Pushchairs aren't allowed. If you want an effortless outing, this isn't it.

Local tip

Comfortable shoes with good grip, because the Petraio steps are worn smooth. Bring water in summer. Lateness at the meeting point isn't refunded, so arrive ten minutes early. You finish at the Pignasecca: the perfect moment for a cuoppo (a paper cone of fried food) or a pizza a portafoglio (a pizza folded in four to eat on the go).
