5 Naples neighbourhoods to explore beyond the old town

Naples has many faces. The postcard one is beautiful and real, but it’s only the surface. To really understand the city you have to go into the neighbourhoods, the ones tourists don’t reach, the ones where Neapolitans live.

1. Chiaia: Neapolitan Art Nouveau

Chiaia is the elegant side of Naples, facing the sea and dotted with Art Nouveau palazzi, known here as liberty. Via dei Mille and Via Filangieri are the streets for quality shopping. But Chiaia is also the neighbourhood of historic cafés: the Gran Caffè Gambrinus is a short walk away, and Piazza dei Martiri is one of the most photogenic corners of the city.

2. Rione Sanità: a neighbourhood reborn

The Rione Sanità had a rough reputation for decades. Today it’s one of the most interesting neighbourhoods in Naples: an experiment in social regeneration that turned the Catacombs of San Gennaro into one of the city’s most original cultural attractions. The murals on the buildings, the craft workshops, the market on Via Vergini: it all tells a story of rebirth.

3. Ponticelli: street art in a working-class district

Ponticelli is the outskirts in the truest sense of the word. Far from the tourist trail, this eastern part of Naples has become an open-air street art museum. The Parco dei Murales project brought artists from all over Italy and Europe to paint the council blocks, turning grey façades into works about memory, identity and redemption.

4. Antignano: the neighbourhood market

Antignano is a residential part of the Vomero, known above all for its local market, one of the liveliest in Naples. You’ll find everything here: Campanian fruit and veg, cheese, clothes, household goods. It’s everyday Naples, no filter.

5. Bagnoli: between the future and its industrial past

Bagnoli is a unique urban case in Italy. Where the Italsider steelworks once stood, employing generations of Neapolitans, there’s now a large regeneration project. The Città della Scienza science centre, the Coroglio coastline, the remains of industrial structures turned photo backdrops: Bagnoli is a neighbourhood suspended between industrial memory and the future.
