What you’ll do
Meet in front of the central station, in Piazza Garibaldi, and set off for Vesuvius. The coach climbs to about 1,000 metres, then you spend an hour and a half on foot, between the climb to the crater, the local guide’s explanations of the volcano and a stop to look down over the bay. On the way back there’s a lunch break, forty-five minutes in a restaurant with pizza and a soft drink.
In the afternoon you enter Pompeii for a two-hour guided visit. You pass through the Forum, the Lupanar (the ancient brothel), a thermopolium (a Roman street-food counter) and the Stabian Baths, with the guide describing life in the city before the eruption of AD 79: bakeries, theatres, frescoes and mosaics. After the visit the coach takes everyone back to Piazza Garibaldi.
Who it’s for
For anyone with one day who wants to tick off Vesuvius and Pompeii without changing transport three times. Good for families; people who have done it with their kids speak well of it. You need a basic level of fitness: the climb to the crater is a sloping path. The guide speaks English or Spanish, not Italian.
Local tip
Bring valid ID, as it’s requested on the day. Closed shoes and a hat: on Vesuvius the sun beats down and the gravel is slippery. In rain or strong wind the crater may be closed, in which case you only do Pompeii. The departure time is indicative: wait for the agency’s confirmation with the exact time and place.
