What you’ll do

You board at the little harbour of Borgo Marinari, at the foot of Castel dell’Ovo, or at the second departure point used by some options. The skipper doubles as your guide: as you leave the harbour he talks about the castle and the city seen from the water, then points the bow towards Mergellina and the hill of Posillipo.

Along Posillipo you go slowly, close to the shore, to see the caves and the historic villas facing the sea, including Villa Lauro and Villa Volpicelli. You reach Marechiaro, the fishing village, and then the Gaiola islet. Here, weather permitting, you stop to swim and snorkel with the masks provided on board.

Drinking water is on board. Options range from half an hour to three hours; if the swim matters to you, choose carefully, because several guests would have liked more time in the water. You return to the same point you left from, with the skipper still telling myths and stories of the coast.

For anyone who wants the sea without the crowd: the boat is private, nine people at most, so it works for couples, families and groups of friends. You need to be comfortable on a small boat. The operator doesn’t allow children under three, pregnant women, anyone over seventy, anyone weighing over 140 kg or with breathing problems.

Local tip

Swimsuit on underneath, towel and sun cream: the swim stop comes with no changing room. Late afternoon, with the low light on Posillipo, is the best time for photos. Before or after, take a walk around Borgo Marinari and along the seafront, which are right there.
