Naples boat trip along Posillipo: swimming, music and coves
The easiest way to understand Posillipo: from the sea. You set off from the pier on Via Caracciolo and follow the hill where, since Roman times, anyone who could afford it built a villa to be left in peace. What you’ll do
You board at the pier on the Via Caracciolo seafront and head out towards Posillipo. Whoever is at the helm tells you about what you see on the coast: the villas, the ancient ruins, the myths tied to the name of the place, which in Greek means roughly «where pain ends».
The stops are the best part. You drop anchor in coves and stretches of protected sea, climb down for a swim and, if you like, use the snorkel masks kept on board. Between stops there’s water, soft drinks and beer; on the private versions there’s also prosecco for a toast.
The basic trip lasts an hour and a half; the three-hour one goes further along the coast. There are semi-private options, in a group, and private ones; there’s also a two-hour private sunset trip. You return to the same pier. The trip needs a minimum of six people to run: otherwise you’re offered an alternative or a refund.
Who it’s for
For anyone who wants a swim in Naples without hunting for a beach, and for those who have seen the centre and want a different afternoon. Good with friends and as a couple; works with kids who can swim. Not suitable for wheelchair users. Short on time, pick the hour-and-a-half version; if you can, go for the three hours.
Local tip
Beach towels on board are rented for a fee, cash only: bring your own. Swimsuit already on, sun cream and a dry change of clothes for the way back. Pair the trip with a walk along the seafront or a coffee in Mergellina before boarding. In summer book a few days ahead: places are few and the minimum number is needed.
