Naples bike tour: from the seafront to the old town

Three hours in the saddle, crossing Naples from one end to the other: from the seafront with Vesuvius ahead to the Decumani, the oldest part of the city. You start near the port, ride along the sea to Castel dell'Ovo and Borgo Marinari, then head up towards Piazza del Plebiscito and Via Toledo and finish in the lanes of the Greek and Roman centre. The guide rides with the group and tells the stories; the bike and water are included, and so are child seats.

What you’ll do

The meeting point is the rental shop near the port, where you collect your bike; it's worth arriving fifteen minutes early to adjust saddles and child seats. The first stretch is the easiest: the seafront, flat and wide, with Castel dell'Ovo and the Borgo Marinari on one side and Vesuvius on the other. You carry on along Via Caracciolo towards Mergellina and Chiaia, with stops for photos and the guide's explanations.

Then you head into the city: Piazza del Plebiscito with the Royal Palace and the basilica of San Francesco di Paola, then Via Toledo, Piazza Carità and Piazza del Gesù Nuovo. Here the traffic and pedestrians pick up and you ride slowly, in single file behind the guide, who picks the route and stops the group when needed.

The last part is in the Decumani, the street grid laid out by the Greeks: Via dei Tribunali, Via Anticaglia, Spaccanapoli, the Duomo. These are narrow lanes with a church on every corner, and here the bike is mostly for getting from one stop to the next. At the end you ride back to the start and return the bike. The route may change because of traffic or weather.

Who it’s for

Good if you're confident on a bike and not put off by Neapolitan traffic: you ride among scooters and pedestrians, and there are a few climbs. Children can come along in child seats, always with an adult. Not suitable if you have back problems, are pregnant or use a wheelchair. If you'd rather not work too hard, ask for an e-bike, paid separately on the day.

Local tip

In summer pick the morning departure: there's no shade on the seafront and midday is punishing. Closed shoes, sunglasses and sun cream, plus a light backpack for water. If you reach the Decumani around lunchtime, you're a step from Via dei Tribunali and Spaccanapoli for a quick bite on the go.

What’s included

Bike + child seats + water.
