What you’ll do

The entrance is in the Rione Sanità. You go down with the guide into the early Christian cemetery, starting with the oldest part, the upper catacomb, decorated in the 3rd century in the so-called Pompeian style: here are some of the earliest Christian paintings in Italy. Then you move on to the underground basilica dedicated to Sant’Agrippino, around which the site grew in the 4th century.

The guide stops at the baptismal font commissioned by Bishop Paul II, who took refuge here in the 8th century during the iconoclast struggles, and at the Byzantine-style frescoes of the 9th and 10th centuries. The highlight is the Crypt of the Bishops, with 5th-century mosaics, including one portraying San Quodvultdeus, bishop of Carthage.

The visit lasts about 45 minutes and ends with a pass for the Catacombs of San Gaudioso and the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità, valid for twelve months: you can see them straight after or on another day. The ticket supports a regeneration project for the Rione Sanità.

Suitable for everyone, including families and anyone short on time: in under an hour you see one of the oldest things in the city. Lovers of early Christian art and religious history will be in their element; if you’re after spooky caves you may be a little disappointed, as the tone here is historical. The pace is brisk, so bear that in mind if you like to linger.
