Naples airport is closed from 1 to 30 November 2026 for runway work. What to check on your ticket and how to reach the city from Salerno and Rome.
Naples' Capodichino airport is closed from 1 to 30 November 2026: the runway is being rebuilt from end to end, and for a month no plane takes off or lands there. GESAC, the company that runs the airport, confirmed it on 21 September. About a third of flights are moving to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi, the rest to Rome, or being cancelled. If you have a ticket for November, here's what to check and how to reach Naples anyway without losing half a day.
Two things up front. First: the actual works last 24 days, the extra six are a buffer for rain, so an early reopening is possible but nobody's promising it, don't count on it. Second: from 1 December everything's back to normal, so for the Immacolata long weekend and for Christmas, flights to Naples resume.
What to check on your ticket
Airlines are moving flights on their own and notifying you by email or in the app, but the email often lands in spam. Open your booking and check the airport code: NAP is Naples, QSR is Salerno, FCO and CIA are Fiumicino and Ciampino. Check the outbound and return separately, because it can happen that the outbound leaves from Salerno and the return lands in Rome. Check the time too: a lot of moved flights have changed their slot, not just their city.
Among the airlines that have already announced the move to Salerno:
- easyJet (Milan Malpensa)
- ITA Airways (Milan Linate)
- Vueling (Barcelona)
- Transavia (Amsterdam and Paris Orly)
- Iberia (Madrid)
- Eurowings (Düsseldorf and Stuttgart)
- flydubai (Dubai)
From Salerno to Naples: train plus shuttle
Salerno's airport is in Pontecagnano, about seventy kilometres from Naples. The link that already exists is the Salerno Airlink bus run by Busitalia, shuttling between the airport and Salerno station in about forty minutes for 5 euro, with services from 6am to 8pm. From Salerno station to Napoli Centrale there are plenty of trains: the regional service takes forty to fifty-five minutes and costs around 5 euro, Frecciarossa and Italo about thirty-five minutes at prices that change by the day. All told, budget two hours door to door, and three if your flight is early morning.
The Campania region has announced that for November it's adding shuttles between the airport and Salerno station and extra trains to Napoli Centrale. There's also talk of direct buses from Capodichino, an information point outside Naples airport and shared taxis at a fixed fare to Salerno: as of 6 October these are plans under study, not a published timetable. We'll add the official plan here once it's out.
From Rome to Naples: the train wins
If your flight has moved to Fiumicino, the route is the Leonardo Express from Fiumicino to Roma Termini (32 minutes, a train every quarter of an hour), then Frecciarossa or Italo to Napoli Centrale, an hour and ten. From Ciampino the bus to Termini takes forty minutes. All told it's a good three hours, and it's worth buying the high-speed train ticket as soon as you know your arrival time: last-minute fares double.
Napoli Centrale is on piazza Garibaldi, with Metro Line 1 and Line 2 right under the station: from there it's ten minutes to Toledo or the Museo. To get your bearings on day one, see Naples in a day.
What changes if you're already in Naples
Nothing changes for the city itself: museums, theatres and everything in things to do in Naples stay open, and November is the month of roast chestnuts, the theatre season getting going and the San Gregorio Armeno nativity fair, which opens on the 1st. The only thing that changes is departures: if you're flying out that month, leave home an hour earlier than usual and check the day before, since airlines are still sorting out schedules.
Frequently asked questions
Is Capodichino really closed for all of November?
Yes, from 1 to 30 November 2026, for the runway rebuild. The works last 24 days plus a buffer for bad weather: an early reopening is possible, but only counts if GESAC announces it.
My flight leaves from Salerno: how do I get there from Naples?
Train from Napoli Centrale to Salerno (35 minutes on the high-speed line, 40-55 on the regional), then the Salerno Airlink bus from the station to the airport, 40 minutes for 5 euro. Budget two hours in total, three if you're leaving early in the morning.
How much time should I allow if I land in Rome?
A good three hours: Leonardo Express from Fiumicino to Termini, then the high-speed train to Napoli Centrale. Buy the train ticket as soon as you know your flight time.
Is everything back to normal in December?
Yes. From 1 December the airport reopens with its usual schedule: the Immacolata long weekend and the Christmas season aren't affected.
Information checked on 6 October 2026 on GESAC's website and in local news outlets. The region's November transport plan isn't published yet: check your airline and this page again a few days before you travel.
