Start
Piazza San Domenico Maggiore
Meet outside the church of San Domenico Maggiore. You start the way Naples starts the day, with a coffee in the square, while the guide tells you about the piazza and its legends. Then you leave the tourist trail and head into the lanes behind the old walls.
You pass the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory, where street musicians play and students hang out, then a quieter street with handmade shops and graffiti on the walls. At Sant'Andrea delle Dame the guide explains where the name comes from and what the street art on the façade is saying.
You finish on Via Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, with the Academy of Fine Arts and a small archaeological dig among the bars of Piazza Bellini. Depending on the guide and the day, the route can stretch to a cemetery the classic tours never reach. It's private: you set the pace and the questions.
For anyone who has seen postcard Naples and now wants the walls, the stories and the people of the old town. Good for couples or small groups of friends, up to eight, and for any fitness level. If you are after museums and church interiors, look elsewhere: this is almost all outdoors.
Local tip
The price is per person and the group stays yours, so it's better value with four or five of you. Bring a charged phone for the murals. You end in Piazza Bellini: a drink at the tables by the Greek walls is the right way to close.
