Underground Naples: the ancient city beneath San Lorenzo and old town

What you’ll do

Meet in Piazza Bellini. From there the guide leads the group through the streets of the centre, stopping along the way to explain what you're seeing, and takes everyone to the entrance of the excavations beneath San Lorenzo Maggiore, where the underground part begins.

Below ground you walk through passages, tunnels and excavated rooms: the level of the Roman city, with the market square, the public buildings and what's left of the forum. The guide explains how this layer stayed intact beneath a city that kept growing on top of it, century after century.

You come back up into daylight and carry on along Spaccanapoli, the dead-straight street that cuts through the old town, with the everyday life of its shops and lanes. You finish in San Gregorio Armeno, among the stalls of artisans who make nativity scenes all year round.

Who it’s for

For first-timers in Naples who want the old town and what lies beneath it in one go. Good for couples, friends and families with older children; groups are no more than fifteen. You walk for two and a half hours, with stairs down and back up: bear that in mind if you have mobility issues.
