What you’ll do

You meet in Piazza Municipio, at the Fountain of Neptune. First stop is Castel Nuovo, the Maschio Angioino, seen from outside with ten minutes of explanation. You cross the Galleria Umberto I and arrive in front of the Teatro di San Carlo, then Piazza del Plebiscito. Each stop lasts about ten minutes, just enough to understand what you’re looking at.

The heart of the tour is the Palazzo Reale: you go in with the ticket included and spend about an hour inside, through the richly decorated rooms of the royal apartments and the historic collections, while the guide tells you who lived there and how.

Out of the palace you walk down Via Santa Lucia, with a quarter of an hour on the story of the old neighbourhood, to the seafront. The last ten minutes are a stroll with Vesuvius ahead of you to Castel dell’Ovo, where the tour ends.

Who it’s for

Good for first-timers in Naples who want to see the landmark sights with someone explaining them, without rushing. The group is small and the pace relaxed. You’re walking the whole time, so it isn’t suitable for anyone with limited mobility or using a wheelchair; no suitcases or large bags.

Local tip

The tour ends below Castel dell’Ovo: from there the pedestrian seafront along Via Caracciolo is the natural next step, all the way to Mergellina. Comfortable shoes and, in summer, the morning slot: Piazza del Plebiscito at midday has no shade. Choose your language when you book, because the tours are separate and often sell out.
