What you’ll do
You meet in Piazza Garibaldi, in front of a hotel next to the station, and get into the minivan. The drive to Herculaneum is short and scenic, with Vesuvius ahead. At the Archaeological Park you meet the guide, who works only with your group, and go in with priority access, skipping the ticket office queue.
The walking visit lasts two hours: everyday Roman life, houses with their upper floors still standing, carbonised materials, mosaics, and the story of the eruption that buried the town. When the tour ends, the minivan takes the group back to Naples, to the same spot you left from. About three hours in all.
Who it’s for
For anyone who wants to see one of the Vesuvian sites properly and calmly without giving up a whole day, and for those who prefer a guide just for their own group. The tour is in English. Less suited to anyone hoping to combine Pompeii and Herculaneum in one trip: this one visits Herculaneum only.
Local tip
Bring a camera or a fully charged phone: the interiors of the houses are worth it. Food and drinks aren’t included, so have breakfast first and bring a bottle of water. If you want to carry on to Vesuvius afterwards, ask the guide about connections from Ercolano.
