Naples walking tour: royal sights, old town and Roman underground

The walking tour that brings the two Naples together: the grand one around Piazza del Plebiscito and the one of the lanes in the ancient centre. You start from the Neptune Fountain, pass the Maschio Angioino, the San Carlo and the Galleria, walk up Via Toledo and into the Decumani as far as San Gregorio Armeno. What you’ll do

Meet in Piazza Municipio, at the Neptune Fountain, with the time confirmed via the booking panel. The guide introduces the history of the city and you walk towards Castel Nuovo, the Teatro di San Carlo, the Galleria Umberto I, Piazza Trieste e Trento and Piazza del Plebiscito, the grand stretch of royal Naples.

From there you take Via Toledo into the old town: Via San Gregorio Armeno with its nativity-scene workshops, and Via dei Tribunali. Beneath the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore, the guided visit to the Roman remains lasts about three quarters of an hour, entry included. The three-hour tour ends between Piazza Bellini and Piazza del Gesù Nuovo.

If you choose the longer option, you stop for an hour for lunch: caprese, spaghetti with tomato sauce or carbonara, tiramisù, a glass of house wine and a bottle of water. In that case the tour ends after the meal. Groups can reach forty people, with headsets when needed to hear the guide clearly.

For first-timers in Naples who want a clear picture of the city in one morning, from palaces to lanes, with a slice of the underground thrown in. There’s a fair amount of walking, so you need reasonable fitness. Less suited to anyone looking for a small group: it’s a large tour, with headsets.

Comfortable shoes and clothes for the weather, because the tour runs even in the rain. If you book lunch, flag allergies and intolerances straight away. Cruise passengers must give their ship and times when booking. The minimum is two participants from April to October, four in winter.
