Royal Palace of Caserta skip-the-line tour with park shuttle

The royal palace Charles of Bourbon commissioned in 1750 to rival Europe's great courts: 1,200 rooms, designed by Luigi Vanvitelli, with a park that seems to go on forever. With a group of no more than sixteen you skip the queue, climb the Grand Staircase and walk through the Royal Apartments, then the shuttle takes you to the far end of the park, past fountains and the waterfall, to the English Garden. Three hours, and at the end you're free to stay on in the grounds.

What you’ll do

Meet in Piazza Carlo di Borbone, at the palace's main entrance, ten minutes before your time. With priority tickets you go straight in, and the first hour and a half is spent in the palace: the Grand Staircase, the chapel, the Royal Apartments with frescoes, gilding and Baroque furniture, and the little court theatre, a miniature echo of the San Carlo. Groups over seven use headsets.

The second part is in the park. You board the shuttle bus included in the price and ride up to the top of the gardens, with fountains and sculptures inspired by classical mythology and the waterfall. From there the guide takes you into the English Garden, full of exotic plants and flowers, where the visit ends.

The tour finishes there, in the middle of the English Garden: if you like, you can stay on and explore the gardens on your own, with no need to keep to the group's schedule, perhaps walking back down the avenues and pools towards the palace. Getting back to Caserta or Naples is up to you, as is getting there.

Who it’s for

For anyone who wants to see the palace without losing an hour in the queue or wearing themselves out on three kilometres of avenues: the shuttle sorts that. Suitable for all fitness levels, but it isn't wheelchair accessible and isn't recommended for anyone with back problems. Guide dogs are allowed.

Local tip

Comfortable shoes, because between the rooms and the gardens you still walk a fair bit. Getting to the meeting point isn't covered by the tour: from Naples the train to Caserta is your best bet, as the station is a short walk from the palace. After the visit, if you have time, stay in the gardens until closing.
