What you’ll do

From Piazza Dante you enter the Greco-Roman grid: straight streets, narrow lanes and a church every few metres. The guide explains why Naples has the Greek street plan, Roman remains, the Middle Ages and the Baroque all at once, and helps you spot them one by one on the façades, moving from one era to the next in a few steps.

Spaccanapoli is the lower decumanus, the dead-straight slit that cuts through the old town from end to end. Along the way you come to San Gregorio Armeno, the street of nativity scenes, with the artisans’ workshops open and the mix of Christian and pagan symbols that’s perfectly normal here. You stop, go in and watch them work.

At some point comes the included tasting, sweet or savoury, to show how Neapolitan culture also travels through food. In the lanes you may well come across street musicians and dancers, part of the show without being on the programme. After two hours you’re free again, right in the heart of the old town.

For first-timers in Naples who want a key to reading the old town before exploring it alone. Do it on your first day: afterwards you’ll explore the old town on your own with different eyes. Piazza Dante has a metro stop, handy for arriving on time. At the end you’re a short walk from the Cristo Velato (Veiled Christ), the Duomo and Napoli Sotterranea, which are booked separately. The lanes are more pleasant in the morning than in the afternoon.
