The star is the Veiled Christ, the marble statue whose veil looks like fabric; around it are the other Baroque statues commissioned by Raimondo di Sangro, the prince who had the whole place built, and in the crypt the two Anatomical Machines, skeletons with their circulatory systems reconstructed. What you’ll do
You meet in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, with the guide at the chapel entrance, a few steps from the square. You go in with the ticket already bought, and the guide starts with the story of Prince Raimondo di Sangro, who commissioned the chapel, and the esoteric symbols hidden among the Baroque sculptures.
Then you stop in front of the Veiled Christ: the guide explains how it was carved and tells the legends that grew up around the marble veil. You go round the other sculptures and finally head down into the crypt, home to the Anatomical Machines. Forty-five minutes in all, with a group of no more than twenty.
Who it’s for
Good if you're short on time and want the most famous thing in the old town with a proper explanation, without worrying about tickets. Fine for families with children who can manage 45 minutes of listening. If you'd rather look in silence, without a group, you can buy a standard ticket; here the value is the guide.
Local tip
After the chapel you're in the heart of Spaccanapoli: San Domenico Maggiore, the Nile statue and Via San Gregorio Armeno are a few minutes' walk away. Book ahead, especially at weekends and on Italian bank holidays, because the chapel is small and time slots sell out fast.
