New Year's Eve in Naples 2026: the free concert in piazza del Plebiscito, fireworks at Castel dell'Ovo, where to watch, dinner and transport.
New Year's Eve in Naples happens out on the street. The free concert in piazza del Plebiscito, fireworks from the sea in front of Castel dell'Ovo, and then the whole city out on its balconies making noise. The night of 31 December 2026 falls on a Thursday, so 1 January 2027 is a Friday and the long weekend is sorted.
One thing is already official. In May the council published the call for artistic proposals for "Capodanno a Napoli 2026-2027": events on 30 and 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027, between piazza del Plebiscito and the lungomare Caracciolo. The artists haven't been announced yet. The full programme usually lands in December, and we'll add it here as soon as it's out.
The big concert in piazza del Plebiscito
It's the biggest party in the south and it's free to attend. The stage stands in front of the basilica of San Francesco di Paola, the square fills up from early evening, and people sing until the small hours. In recent years national names have shared the stage with Neapolitan artists: for New Year 2026 there were Elodie and Serena Brancale, with Gigi Finizio, LDA, Franco Ricciardi and Andrea Sannino, and the square was packed despite the cold.
The programme has spread over more days and more venues in recent years. For 2025-2026 there were evenings at the PalaVesuvio and the Alcott Arena on 29 and 30 December, dj sets in piazza Municipio and at the Rotonda Diaz on the night of the 31st, and a midday concert on 1 January. For 2026-2027 the council's notice points to 30 December, the night of the 31st and the afternoon of 1 January: the pattern should stay similar, but we'll know the details in December.
The fireworks on the seafront, and where to watch them
The official fireworks go off from the sea in front of Castel dell'Ovo, well into the night: for New Year 2026 the display started at 2.15am, after the concert. The timing for 2026-2027 will be in the council's programme. These are the only fireworks allowed in that area: the ordinance in recent years has banned private bangers and firecrackers in piazza del Plebiscito, piazza Municipio and along the seafront.
The best places to watch from, from the easiest to the most scenic:
- Via Partenope and the Borgo Marinari: right opposite the castle. The view is the best, and so is the crowd.
- Rotonda Diaz and via Caracciolo: a bit further off, more space, and in recent years there's been a dj set too.
- Mergellina and the first bends of via Posillipo: you see the fireworks with the whole gulf behind them, and Vesuvius if the night is clear.
- Largo San Martino, below Castel Sant'Elmo: from up here you see the official fireworks and, above all, the private ones across the whole city. At midnight Naples lights up from every balcony.
The San Martino viewpoint, by day, is the place to take anyone visiting Naples for the first time. If you also want to go inside Castel Sant'Elmo and the Certosa, there's the guided visit to the city from above. And if the 31st is sunny, the sunset boat trip is an elegant way to see off the year before the chaos starts: just check it's running, in winter the trips depend on the sea.
Cenone, lentils and 'o botto
The New Year's Eve dinner, cenone, in Naples looks a lot like Christmas Eve's: fish, spaghetti with clams, fried food, insalata di rinforzo, the Christmas vegetable salad, still going round, and struffoli, honey coated pastry balls, still sitting about the house. After midnight come the lentils with cotechino or zampone, the festive pork sausages: the more lentils you eat, the more money arrives. Nobody has ever checked, but nobody risks it.
The traditions you'll see, or hear:
- 'O botto: at midnight the city explodes, literally. Private fireworks are an old tradition and also a real hazard, people get hurt every year. Watch from a distance and keep children indoors.
- Throwing old things out of the window: this used to be how people left the year behind, broken plates included. It's banned now and almost gone, but grandparents still tell the story.
- Wearing something red at midnight, for good luck. Tradition says it should be a gift.
- Pomegranate on the table: lots of seeds, lots of luck for the new year.
If you don't have a Neapolitan home to eat in, book your restaurant early: set menus for the 31st fill up by early December. For afterwards, and for the evenings around New Year, there's our guide to what to do in Naples at night.
Getting around on the night of the 31st
The rule is simple: leave the car where it is. From the afternoon of the 31st the centre closes to traffic around piazza del Plebiscito and the seafront, and parking is out of the question. For New Year's night 2026 metro Line 1 and the Centrale and Chiaia funiculars ran all night without a break, while the Mergellina funicular closed earlier (Montesanto is closed for works until February 2027 this year). For 2026-2027 the night service isn't confirmed yet: ANM announces it in late December, and we'll add it here as soon as it's out.
1 January: the swim, and a city that wakes up late
On the morning of 1 January some people sleep in, others jump into the sea. Every year at the Rotonda Diaz, opposite Mergellina, a group of swimmers does the New Year dip around midday, and a small crowd gathers to watch in their coats. It's an open event, no sign up and no ticket: in 2026 plenty jumped in, regulars and newcomers alike. If you want to join in, go in slowly and don't stay in the water more than a few minutes.
The rest of the day the city wakes up slowly. In recent years there's been a midday concert in piazza Municipio and a dj set in the afternoon, and several state museums have stayed open on 1 January: the culture ministry publishes the list in December. Sunday 3 January is the first Sunday of the month, the free state museums day, if the scheme stays as it is.
New Year's lunch is long again, and with family again. The afternoon is good for a walk along the seafront to Castel dell'Ovo, with the party mess just cleared away, or a turn through the old town with the nativity scenes still lit up. If you have a few days, our one day in Naples itinerary works in winter too, just bring everything forward an hour because it's dark by five.
To keep track of tonight's spots, seafront, Plebiscito, San Martino and Mergellina, open the map of Naples. We'll add the official programme for New Year's in Naples 2026 to What's on as soon as the council announces it, usually in December.
For the rest of your stay: things to do in Naples today, this weekend and in the days ahead, checked every morning.
