Three hours of tastings in a small group, in English, starting and ending in Piazza Dante. Over four or more stops you eat an almond and black pepper tarallo, pizza a portafoglio, a frittatina di pasta, a plate of ragù, and to finish, babà and coffee, with water and a beer included. What you’ll do

You meet in Piazza Dante and head down Via Toledo for the first stop, half an hour: the handmade Neapolitan tarallo, a ring-shaped savoury biscuit with almonds and black pepper, then pizza a portafoglio, folded in four to eat as you walk. You climb back towards the ancient centre, and in San Gregorio Armeno comes the frittatina di pasta, a fried cylinder of pasta, béchamel and peas.

The third stop, near the Cappella Sansevero, is Neapolitan ragù: a proper portion of meat slow-cooked in tomato. Then you carry on towards Santa Chiara for another street food stop. Each stop lasts about half an hour, and between them there are walks of 10 or 15 minutes at a stretch.

The last half hour is for dessert and coffee: a rum-soaked babà and an espresso. The tastings may change with the season and time of day, but the sequence of savoury, hot dish and sweet stays the same. You end back in Piazza Dante. The group is small: for more than twelve people you need to check with the operator first.

Who it’s for

For English speakers who want a lunch or dinner that fills them up for the day and who are happy to walk: couples, friends, families with children, who get a reduced rate. Not suitable for anyone with limited mobility, as there are stretches of continuous walking between stops. If you’re short on time, bear in mind it’s a full three hours.

Local tip

Dress for the weather, because three hours between stops make themselves felt in summer and winter alike. Don’t eat beforehand. Piazza Dante is on metro line 1 and a step away from Port’Alba and the Archaeological Museum: if you book the afternoon slot, do the museum in the morning.
