Naples food tour in the old town from Piazza Bellini, with spritz

Two and a half hours of tastings through the Decumani, in English, starting at the Greek walls in Piazza Bellini and finishing in Piazza del Gesù. You eat in neighbourhood spots and on the street: taralli, frittatina (a deep-fried pasta patty), pizza fritta, mozzarella, babà and gelato, with a spritz and a taste of limoncello along the way. Between stops you pass through Via dei Tribunali, San Gregorio Armeno and Spaccanapoli, so you see the old town while you eat. Portions are generous: by the end it's dinner.

Piazza Bellini

What you’ll do

The meeting point is Piazza Bellini, next to the remains of the Greek walls, where the guide waits with a sign. After a ten-minute introduction you head to the first stop, a twenty-minute tasting at a local place, then on to Via dei Tribunali for the second, also twenty minutes. Next comes a stop for drinks, ten minutes for a spritz or a limoncello.

You cross Piazza San Gaetano for another tasting, fifteen minutes, and head down Via San Gregorio Armeno to Piazzetta Nilo, where the first dessert arrives. From there you turn onto Spaccanapoli as far as Piazza San Domenico Maggiore for the second dessert. Along the way you also pass through a neighbourhood market for mozzarella and freshly made pizza fritta.

You finish in Piazza del Gesù, in front of the church, after a stretch on Via Toledo. About ten stops in all, half eating and half walking, with the guide telling you about the recipes and the history of the places between bites. The group moves at a slow pace but with few chances to sit down for long.

Who it’s for

Perfect if you speak English and want to eat dinner on foot on your first evening in town, as a couple or with friends. Also good if you're short on time, because it combines tastings and the old town in one afternoon. Not suitable for vegans, coeliacs or the lactose intolerant, nor for wheelchair users; vegetarians must let them know in advance. If you have a nut allergy, watch out for cross-contamination.

Local tip

Arrive on an empty stomach and skip lunch, because portions are bigger than you'd expect. Comfortable shoes: you're standing and on paving stones for over two hours. If you book the late-afternoon slot, you can visit the Archaeological Museum beforehand, a step from Piazza Bellini.
