Naples street food tour: mozzarella, pizza fritta and limoncello

Two and a half hours in the lanes of the old town with an English-speaking guide who knows where Neapolitans stop to eat standing up. You taste fresh buffalo mozzarella, pizza fritta (deep-fried pizza), a slice of margherita, and finish with a small glass of limoncello. Between bites, the guide shares the history and stories of one of the oldest cities in Italy. Groups of up to 15, starting from Piazza Bellini.

Start

Piazza Bellini

What you’ll do

You meet in Piazza Bellini. From there you head into the lanes of the ancient centre and start with buffalo mozzarella, eaten fresh as it should be. Next comes pizza fritta, which people here eat on the move, and a slice of margherita, the oven-baked chapter of the same story.

At every stop the guide explains what you’re eating and tells you about the history of the city and the neighbourhoods you walk through. The last stop is limoncello, a small glass to round things off. It’s two and a half hours of slow walking with frequent stops. The organisers are clear about it: come on an empty stomach.

Groups are capped at 15 people and the tour is in English. The pace is set by the lanes: narrow streets, short stops, lots of people around, especially at weekends and at mealtimes.

Who it’s for

For first-timers who want to cover the basics of Neapolitan street food in one afternoon without hunting down the places themselves. Good for groups of friends and solo travellers, since the group is small. Less suited to anyone who doesn’t follow English: the guide only speaks that language.

Local tip

Go easy on breakfast and skip lunch: the tastings are a proper meal. Wear comfortable shoes for the paving stones. Piazza Bellini is a stone’s throw from Via dei Tribunali and San Gregorio Armeno, so there’s plenty to walk to before or after. Book ahead for bank holidays and weekends.

What’s included

Tastings at every stop.
