Port’Alba, Piazza Dante

What you’ll do

You start from Port’Alba, the 1625 gate linking Piazza Dante to the street of booksellers. The first stop is at a place in the old town that has been going for over fifty years, for pizza with scarola (escarole), olives and walnuts: Neapolitan peasant cooking, twenty minutes. Then Piazza del Gesù, with the story of the façade of the Gesù Nuovo and its wartime miracle.

Second stop, the montanara: fried dough, tomato and cheese, the street food that legend says King Ferdinand of Bourbon loved. Another twenty minutes of tasting and off you go again. Forty minutes later you’re inside a palazzo from 1412, once the embassy of the Republic of Venice, with a spritz in the roof garden among art and history.

You carry on towards Piazzetta Nilo and the Decumani with more pizzas, ending with a small dessert. Stops and tastings may change depending on the day and the season, but the total is always at least six different pizzas, from the classics to more modern ones like the fried version. You finish with a full stomach and no need for dinner.

Who it’s for

For anyone who wants to understand pizza in Naples beyond the margherita, and who’d rather be guided by a local than pick places at random. The guide only speaks English. Vegetarian and gluten-free diets can be accommodated if you mention them when booking; not suitable for anyone with serious food allergies. Under-fours join for free, without food.

Local tip

Don’t have lunch beforehand: six pizzas is a lot, even by the slice. Arrive at the meeting point a quarter of an hour early; the confirmation email on your phone is all you need. The tour needs at least two participants to go ahead, so it’s a safer bet as a couple or with friends.
