Wine, babà and murals: Sanità food tour from Porta San Gennaro

A tasting tour that leaves the tourist centre for the Sanità, the neighbourhood behind Porta San Gennaro where Neapolitans still do their shopping at the Vergini market. In two and a half hours, in English, you eat pizza margherita, mozzarella, taralli, sfogliatella and babà with wine, beer and limoncello, while looking at the murals and, from outside, the Palazzo dello Spagnuolo. You start and finish at Porta San Gennaro. It’s the right tour if you’ve already seen Spaccanapoli and want everyday Naples.

Porta San Gennaro

What you’ll do

You meet at Porta San Gennaro, one of the old city gates, where the guide explains who San Gennaro is and why he matters so much here. The first stop is a tasting straight away, then you enter the Rione Sanità. You walk through the Vergini market, open in the mornings only, among stalls of vegetables and fish and the shouts of the vendors.

From the market you reach the Palazzo dello Spagnuolo, a 17th-century Baroque palace, seen from outside. Then stops in neighbourhood places alternate with stretches on foot among the Sanità’s murals: pizza margherita, fresh mozzarella, crunchy taralli, with local wine and beer. The guide talks about life in the neighbourhood and the people who live there.

You finish with something sweet, sfogliatella or babà, and limoncello. The route is a loop and you’re back at Porta San Gennaro after about two and a half hours. The exact stops aren’t announced in advance and may change, but the number of tastings stays the same. Children can only take part with an adult.

Who it’s for

For English speakers who aren’t on their first visit, or for anyone who wants to start with the less touristy side of Naples: couples, friends, families with accompanied kids. Fine for vegetarians too, if they say so when booking. Not suitable for coeliacs or anyone gluten intolerant, as there are no gluten-free alternatives.

Local tip

Choose a morning slot if you want to catch the Vergini market in full swing, because it closes in the afternoon. Comfortable shoes and an empty stomach. You’re a few steps from the Catacombs of San Gennaro and from the Basilica della Sanità with the Catacombs of San Gaudioso: worth combining them to make a full half-day of the neighbourhood.

Can I bring children? Can I cancel?
